Orthodontics Treatment – Facial Asymmetry

Facial asymmetry refers to the condition where one half of the face is not equivalent as the other half. It is common to have some degree of asymmetry as no facial symmetry is 100% perfect, however, continuous asymmetrical development can lead to malocclusions that may need orthodontic treatment. Provided that the condition is not severe, surgery may not be required and the condition may be treated through orthodontics. After determining the severity of asymmetry, the appropriate treatment methods can be recommended.

Orthodontic Treatment

Facial Asymmetry

Orthognathic and plastic surgery can treat severe facial asymmetry. If the severity of the facial asymmetry does not fall under the severe category, it can be treated through simple orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment can move and align the teeth to achieve an ideal occlusion.

Cases that may require orthodontic treatment due to facial asymmetry :

  • Only one side of the lip is lifted when smiling
  • Uneven facial lines when biting teeth together
  • Upper and lower midline not matching when biting teeth together
  • Uneven jaw line, tipping of the chin to one side
  • Chewing on one side due to malocclusion

Is orthodontic treatment necessary for facial asymmetry?

Once facial asymmetry is visibly evident, facial muscles and bone may continue to develop asymmetrically. Facial asymmetry may become severe, leading to other functional problems, hence it must be examined and controlled at the orthodontic treatment level rather than having a surgical procedure.

Various treatment methods depending on the cause and severity of facial asymmetry.

With simple malocclusions, satisfactory results can be achieved through orthodontic treatment. When facial asymmetry is due to the difference in muscle length, treatment methods such as botox and radio frequency (RT) treatment is effective. When it is due to the difference in bone length, it should fundamentally be treated through orthognathic surgery (one and/or two jaw surgery).
