Orthodontic Treatment – Protruding Chin
Conditions such as protruding chin and longer lower chin can be improved by orthodontic treatment. Protruding chin is a 3rd degree malocclusion condition and refers to when the tip of the chin is longer and protruding. Prognathism refers to the long protruding lower jaw and its common cause is the under-development of the upper chin or the over-development of the lower chin. Environmentally, the lack of or over-development may result in a malocclusion that occurs if the teeth are prematurely extracted or the lower chin is pushed forward as a habit.
Orthodontic Treatment
Protruding ChinProtruding chin is usually accompanied by a class III malocclusion that requires simultaneous surgery and orthodontic treatment if there are skeletal dysfunction. Bulky tip of the chin can be improved through genioplasty. All orthodontic treatment involving protruding chin should be carefully analysed and diagnosed prior to the selection of the treatment method. This is to ensure that the patient’s needs are delivered.
Cases that may require orthodontic treatment due to protruding chin :
- Lower teeth cover the upper teeth when biting
- Changes in facial shape; round to long
- Difficulty in chewing
- Severe bad breath even with regular brushing
- Protruding lower lip when viewed from the side
Is orthodontic treatment necessary for protruding chin?
Orthodontic treatment of protruding chin may present with chewing difficulties, leading to digestive disorders and normal speech/pronunciation may not be possible. Maintaining oral hygiene can become challenging which may result in tooth decay and bad breath, effecting social relations.

Zeah Doctor’s Guide
Dr. Yoon Sun Kim (Director)
It is necessary to treat protruding chin as it can affect the daily functional aspects, such as chewing.
A protruding chin not only affects the aesthetic aspects but also the functional ability to chew. It is a condition that needs to be treated and improved through orthognathic surgery or other surgical methods. However, if the condition is not severe, it can be improved solely through orthodontic treatment without the need for a surgical procedure. Protruding chin is usually a congenital condition but can arise through habitual pushing of the lower chin. It is important to control habitual causes early to prevent the deformation of the chin.
