Orthodontic Treatment – Deep Bite

Occlusion refers to the state where the upper and lower teeth come together into a functional alignment when the mouth is closed. The ‘normal’ occlusion is when the upper teeth slightly covers the lower teeth anteriorly and posteriorly. A ‘deep-bite’ is a type of malocclusion that is characterised by the upper teeth covering the lower teeth, making the lower teeth barely visible. A deep bite will usually present with a short face vertically, as the length between the nose and the tip of the chin is very short.

Orthodontic Treatment

Deep Bite

The lower jaw appears retracted due to the prominence of the upper jaw. It can be treated through orthodontics but in severe cases, orthodontic treatment must be accompanied by surgery. It is usually treated without extractions and insertion of a mini-screw or removable device to re-position the front teeth.

Cases that may require orthodontic treatment due to a deep bite :

  • Upper teeth cover the lower teeth
  • Upper front teeth are more prominent
  • Lower front teeth become barely visible
  • The incisal edges of the lower teeth are worn out and dented inwards
  • Frequent and intense pain of the lower jaw/TMJ

Is orthodontic treatment necessary for a deep bite?

With a deep bite, the upper jaw hinders the movement of the lower jaw, which can lead to pain in the temporomandibular joint. In severe cases, the gums behind the front teeth, on the palate, may constantly be inflamed to the traumatic contact with the lower front teeth. This can have detrimental effects on the roots of the teeth, especially if it worsens over time. Hence, there is a need for orthodontic treatment for deep bite malocclusions.

Sufficient skill and knowledge is required to treat a deep bite.

A deep bite needs to be corrected at the early stages of the condition. If a deep bite was to be treated through the correction the only the upper teeth, there is a high chance of relapse as the lower teeth will continuously push the upper teeth after the treatment. To allow the patient to avoid dealing with temporomandibular joint pain or relapse, it is important to accurately diagnose and plan prior to the treatment.
