Orthodontic Treatment – Cross-bite

‘Cross-bite’ is characterised by the lower teeth covering the upper teeth, which can be corrected through repositioning and alignment. If the source of the problem lies within tooth alignment, orthodontic treatment can correct the cross-bite. If the problem involves structural bones, surgery may need to accompany the orthodontic treatment for correction. A protruding chin usually accompanies a cross-bite.

Orthodontic Treatment

Cross-bite

‘Cross-bite’ malocclusions are commonly evident in the anterior region resulting in degrees of protrusion of the mandible. Depending on the severity of structural involvement, some cases may only require orthodontic treatment but severe cases such as severe chin protrusion would require a one/two jaw orthognathic surgery. The duration and the effectiveness of the treatment varies depending on the severity of the cross-bite.

Cases that may require orthodontic treatment due to a cross-bite:

  • Regions of or the entire lower teeth protrudes in front of the upper teeth
  • The lower jaw protrudes in front of the upper jaw
  • Upper and lower teeth are not properly aligned and as a result, chewing is difficult
  • Frequent and intensifying pain in the temporomandibular joint
  • Problem in pronunciation

Is orthodontic treatment necessary for a cross-bite?

Orthodontic treatment is necessary for a cross-bite as untreated cross-bites results in abnormally worn out upper teeth, root damage of lower teeth and temporomandibular joint pain in severe cases. If these symptoms are evident in a growing child, it is likely to results in a significant protrusion of the chin as the upper jaw are trapped behind the lower jaw, restricting growth. With severe protrusion of the mandible, the child would require orthognathic surgery.

Cross-bite malocclusions are most commonly caused by genetic inheritance but can also be caused by severe adenoid or tonsillitis

Cross-bites can be treated through orthodontic treatment but surgical procedures may be more beneficial in rapid improvement over a short period of time for cases with severe chin protrusion. The severity of the cross-bite progress over time hence early diagnosis and treatment is critical.
